This is probably my first time I’ve used flash this extensively on my own as usually its with the guidance and assistance of strobist Nutcase23 although I did have much needed and appreciated help from now-NSmen Zh3us. With a keen spirit and a head full of ideas I did my best to bring out the creepiness and dreary atmosphere of what Dark Wood Circus had to offer me.
Although it has been some time since the actual shoot I distinctively remember having many ideas for the theme itself however with my inexperience with flash it proved difficult to achieve the intended result. Through much trial and error some photos came out on par with what I wanted however many others did not.
I’ll keep it short but all-in-all I realized (especially for flash/strobe photography) much experimentation is needed inĀ order to become proficient in it and that it requires more than just learning the technical aspects and theory (I’m sure this applies to many other aspects of photography also).
As some of you may know the location was Fort Canning Park in Singapore which is pretty grossly overused due to Singapore’s small size. Sometimes you just have to improvise in certain times. Some of the visitors centre function rooms seem to be unlocked (probably accidentally) which worked perfectly as an impromptu studio. Even the worn dilapidated look of the rooms coincidentally suited the theme which worked well. I guess sometimes you have to take risks to get the shots you want.
With that said I had fun meeting new faces being cosplayers and photographers. Learned some new things about my camera and its capabilities from other photographers (thanks Brian
). Without further delay here are photos. Comment and criticism would be heavily appreciated as like I said before it’s my first time using flash extensively. Thanks guys!
The full gallery for the shoot can be found here.
While we were waiting for the cosplayers to prepare we decided to have some fun! Fooling around as well as experimenting with the multiple exposure setting on the camera.
